The financial aid and scholarships I've received have allowed me to attend school with less of a worry about being able to pay my bill for each semester. This financial support gives me the chance to focus of my academics and my future without the constant worry/anxiety about finances.
I'm beyond appreciative of those who support student scholarships and want them to know that they're allowing people, such as myself, the opportunity to make themselves and their loved ones proud and have hope for the future.
I chose to attend Southern New Hampshire University for its academics. I feel as though the the university puts a lot of effort into the Justice Studies program and offers a lot of opportunities for students pursing a career in the criminal justice system. SNHU is also beautiful and constantly has updates being made around the campus.
My hope in receiving a college education was not only to learn about the various paths I could take in my major, but also to gain skills in other areas — both academically and personally. My experience was largely different than former students because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic began during my freshman year of college and has completely shifted what I though my college experience would be like. However, I believe I gained and learned a lot about who I am because of this.
My family, particularly my uncle Ronnie, inspired me to chose my area of study. My dream job is to join the United States Navy. My uncle was in the Navy for several years and is a major factor as to why I want to follow in his footsteps. My grandfather was also a World War ll veteran and had a respectable career as a police officer. I've always gravitated towards this path since I was a child.
Victoria Plimpton has been my biggest influence at SNHU. She was the first faculty member I met when coming to campus and has been a constant guide and friend since. She is always there if I need someone to talk to and aids me in any issue I may be faced with.
I'm involved in Greek Life on campus. I joined Phi Omega Psi my freshman year and I'm now the current president of the organization. Additionally, I've worked in the Office of Residence Life as a student worker and Resident Assistant, and now as a Community Advisor. I also worked in the Office of Student Involvement/Student Affairs as a student worker.
I'd say the most challenging aspect of being a student is managing a busy schedule. I deal with this in the sense that I like to plan out my week. I'm a very organized person, so by creating calendars and schedules it lets me keep track of what I have going on, as well as being a form of stress relief.
I'm proudest of what I accomplished when the pandemic began. Throughout the pandemic I was able to keep my grades up as well as focus on myself. During the course of the lock down, I managed to lose 85 pounds. Losing weight has always been a struggle for me, especially as a kid. Being able to set my mind to it and lose the weight really changed how I looked at myself and I gained a lot of confidence and learned my self-worth as a result.
I hope to stay in contact with students who've not graduated yet, as well as be in touch with the faculty members who made an impact during my time at SNHU. Visits to campus and attending events such as Homecoming Weekend will definitely be a priority for me post graduation.
